Tessuti Awards 2010
Linen and Lace, by Lilian Zhu
About my Linen and Lace
- Pattern Used: A commercial pattern
- Fabrics Used: Tessuti's Hanky White Enzyme Washed Linen (white and tea-stained, also used in lining), White Cotton Crotchet Table Runner, White Nylon Lace, Cotton Bias Binding, Satin Ribbon
- Time To Create: 5 weeks
- Dress Influenced By: I have been inspired by the lovely theme 'everything old is new again,' and the recycled crotchet table runner I sourced from Vinnies. I used every inch of it, and the bodice has been tea-stained with a mix of Lipton Lemon and Black teas until I acheived my desired colour. I aimed to create a beautiful, elegant yet modern, free-spirited dress using the large circle skirt and the bare lace on skin appeal. The dress has a mix of vintage and modern influences through its neckline, lace overlay and plunging back/front. The waistline is raised under the lace overlay and tapers into the waist on the other side, creating a unique and varied waistline. Its reversibility allows the dress to suit a variety of body sizes and shapes, and allow freedom for the wearer. The large circle skirt has 6 slash and seam inserted, self-drafted lace godets, inspired by my own vintage collection. I was also inspired by the properties of linen - it's fit, and beautiful drape.
- Additional Information: Please take special note: The dress features a reversible design with a high boat neck with plunging deep V back one way, or V front with high neck on the back. I feel this is an extremely effective and unique feature and produces a garment that does not compromise aesthetic for its functionality, something not always easy to find and/or acheive. It has a very comfortable and flattering fit both ways, and the dress allows the wearer much freedom with how to present it. One way is an empire line with empty back, suitable for (but by no means restricted to) a beautiful park picnic or lunch by the beach, whereas the deep v-neck front allows the dress an enhanced sophisticated and elegant appeal. It is a dress which feels as beautiful to wear as it looks. The bodice has neckline and bust darts, is front-lined in linen and partially interfaced, and the armholes and back edges are cotton bias binded by hand. All internal seams are overlocked. Closures are an invisible zip, hook & eye and optional ribbon. A layered lace, ribbon, and linen flower feature with Swarvoski crystal beads add a delicate and elegant touch to the garment.
